Tableau Creator costs $75 per user per month, requires an annual contract, has no real-time streaming, no 3D charts and no monthly billing option. Dashtera delivers GPU-accelerated dashboards from $20 per user per month with flat pricing, unlimited data connectors on paid plans, optional real-time streaming, no annual commitment, and specialist chart types including 3D, spectrograms and over 100 financial technical indicators that Tableau does not have.
Tableau has set the standard for visual data exploration since 2003, and any honest comparison should start there.
Creator is $75 per user per month, Explorer $42 and Viewer $15, all billed annually. On the Enterprise tier those rise to $115, $70 and $35. A fifty-person deployment with 5 Creators, 15 Explorers and 30 Viewers costs roughly $60,900 per year in licences alone, before training and infrastructure.
Tableau is a batch analytics platform. Data is extracted, imported or queried on a schedule. There is no native WebSocket streaming and no live time-series connection, so real-time use cases need middleware or a different tool entirely.
There is no monthly billing option. Single-year contracts typically cost 20 to 30 percent more than multi-year deals, and renewals commonly include annual uplifts of 5 to 7 percent. For organizations with changing headcount, that inflexibility is a real constraint.
Tableau Viewer at $15 per user per month, or $35 on the enterprise tier, is a licence to look at work somebody else built. In most organizations viewers are the largest group by far, so a dashboard that goes out to 100 people carries $1,500 per month in licences before a single person edits anything. In Dashtera, people who only view dashboards do not need a paid seat at all.
Explorer allows web editing of existing content but cannot connect to new raw data sources. In practice, most people who need to extend a dashboard end up needing a Creator licence at $75, which is how deployments quietly become more expensive than the original quote.
The catalogue covers bar, line, scatter, maps, heat maps and Gantt charts. Engineering, scientific and trading teams needing 3D surfaces, frequency-domain plots or indicator-driven financial charts have to look elsewhere or build extensions.
Tableau Server deployments need capacity planning, upgrades and an administrator. That cost rarely appears in the initial comparison but is very visible a year in.
Dashtera is not trying to replace Tableau's depth of ad-hoc analysis. It targets the cases where Tableau is expensive, slow to live data, or missing the chart types entirely: real-time operations, engineering and scientific visualization, and financial dashboards.
| Real-time connectors | Prometheus, InfluxDB 1, InfluxDB 2, InfluxDB 3, TimescaleDB, WebSocket |
|---|---|
| Database and cloud | Google BigQuery, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS SQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Snowflake, Redis, Elasticsearch, Apache Cassandra, Databricks, Trino |
Paid plans include unlimited data connectors, so connecting PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Snowflake costs the same as connecting Google BigQuery, with no per-source surcharges. Real-time streaming from Prometheus, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB and WebSocket is available as an add-on to any paid plan. The full list is on the data connectors page.
One flat price per user, no tier puzzle
Every user on a Dashtera plan has full authoring access. There is no Creator, Explorer and Viewer split to model out, no annual-only requirement and no contractual uplift. Pricing is published: Basic free, Business Intelligence $20, Engineering and Science $40, Finance and Trading $50 per user per month, with 17 percent off annual billing.
Real-time streaming built into the architecture
With the real-time streaming add-on, WebSocket, Prometheus, InfluxDB and TimescaleDB feed GPU-rendered charts continuously, which is what telemetry, process monitoring and trading dashboards need and what a batch platform cannot do.
GPU rendering instead of extracts
Tableau's usual answer to large data is an extract and careful aggregation. Dashtera renders on the GPU through WebGL, holding 60 frames per second at millions of points, so dashboards stay interactive without an extract strategy behind them.
Chart types Tableau does not include
3D surface, scatter, bar and line charts, spectrograms, polar charts, waveform displays, and more than 100 technical indicators with 30 plus drawing tools for financial analysis.
Video Panel and Data Playback
Video Panel puts live or recorded footage on the canvas beside the data. Data Playback replays history through the live dashboard at configurable speed for post-incident review and training. Tableau has neither.

Fifty-user cost comparison
Tableau Standard with 5 Creators, 15 Explorers and 30 Viewers costs roughly $60,900 per year, before training at $1,500 to $3,000 per Creator, Server infrastructure and typical annual uplifts. The same fifty people on Dashtera Business Intelligence cost $12,000 per year, and that falls further because only the people building dashboards need a paid seat.
View and interact with published dashboards only. Annual contract required.
Web editing of existing content. Cannot connect to new raw data sources. Annual contract.
Full authoring, Desktop and Prep Builder. Annual contract, typical 5 to 7 percent annual uplift.
Creator, Explorer and Viewer on the enterprise tier, per user per month.
Basic 2D charts, up to 3 charts per dashboard, 500 data points, CSV, JSON, XML and Excel import, 100 MB storage. No credit card, no time limit. Database connectors and real-time streaming are not included.
Unlimited charts and data points, SQL database queries, unlimited data connectors, advanced sharing, 1 GB storage. Real-time streaming available as an add-on.
Everything in Business Intelligence plus advanced XY charting, full 3D charting, polar charts and engineering and scientific chart types.
Everything in Engineering and Science plus technical analysis charts, 100+ indicators and 30+ drawing tools.
How to read this table
Tableau Viewer is not a cheap version of Tableau. It is a licence to look at dashboards other people built, and most organizations have far more viewers than authors. Dashtera does not charge for viewing at all, so the honest comparison for a 50-person team is 5 Tableau Creators plus 45 paid viewers and explorers, against 5 paid Dashtera seats and 45 people viewing for free.
How Dashtera plans fit together
Basic is free and covers file-based dashboards with basic 2D charts. The paid plans add unlimited charts and data points, SQL database queries and unlimited data connectors, with Engineering and Science adding 3D and polar charting and Finance and Trading adding technical analysis. Real-time streaming, statistics charts, map charts and machine learning are add-ons to any paid plan, and annual billing saves 17 percent. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Choose Dashtera when:
cost per user matters and you want flat pricing without tier modelling or annual lock-in. You need real-time streaming from IoT, telemetry, industrial or financial sources. You need 3D charts, spectrograms, technical indicators, Video Panel or Data Playback. Your data sits outside Salesforce. You want dashboards that stay fast without an extract strategy.
Stay with Tableau when:
deep ad-hoc visual analysis is the daily work, with complex calculated fields and cross-dimensional exploration. You are embedded in Salesforce and that integration delivers value. You have an existing Tableau Server estate where switching costs outweigh the savings. Your governance and compliance processes are already built around Tableau.
A common split
Analytics teams often keep Tableau for exploratory analysis of historical business data and run Dashtera for the operational, engineering and real-time dashboards Tableau was never designed for. That usually costs less than expanding Tableau seats across both use cases.
No code required. Start free on the Basic plan with no credit card, then add database connectors, advanced charts or real-time streaming when you need them. Annual billing saves 17 percent.
Start for free See all plans Real-time examplesDashtera is the strongest alternative for teams needing real-time streaming, GPU rendering, 3D charts or substantially lower per-user cost. At $20 per user per month for full authoring against $75 for Tableau Creator, it is roughly 73 percent less, with no annual contract requirement. For deep ad-hoc analysis of historical business data inside the Salesforce ecosystem, Tableau remains the reference tool.
On the Standard tier, Viewer is $15, Explorer $42 and Creator $75 per user per month, all billed annually. On Enterprise they are $35, $70 and $115. There is no free tier and no monthly billing, and renewals commonly include annual uplifts of 5 to 7 percent.
Not natively. Tableau is a batch analytics platform where data is extracted or queried on a schedule. Real-time behaviour requires additional middleware. Dashtera has native WebSocket, Prometheus, InfluxDB 1/2/3 and TimescaleDB connectors that stream continuously into GPU-rendered charts.
No. The built-in catalogue covers bar, line, scatter, maps, heat maps and Gantt charts. Dashtera includes GPU-accelerated 3D surface, scatter, bar and line charts as standard no-code chart types in the Engineering and Science plan at $40 per user per month.
Yes, and many teams do. Tableau handles exploratory analysis of historical business data while Dashtera runs the real-time, engineering and operational dashboards. Both can read the same databases, so no second data pipeline is needed.
In Dashtera, nothing. Viewing a shared dashboard does not require a paid seat. In Tableau, every viewer needs a Viewer licence at $15 per user per month on Standard or $35 on Enterprise, billed annually. For a dashboard shared with 100 colleagues that difference is $18,000 per year before anyone edits anything.
Yes. Dashtera Basic is free with no time limit and no credit card. It covers basic 2D charts with file-based data rather than database connectors or real-time streaming, which come with the paid plans. Tableau has no free tier beyond Tableau Public, which requires publishing your data publicly.
