Power BI is retiring real-time streaming in October 2027, and new streaming models have been blocked since October 2024. It charges $14 per user per month for anyone who merely views a shared dashboard, requires DAX for any non-trivial metric, and has no 3D charts, spectrograms or financial technical indicators built in. Dashtera closes every one of those gaps with GPU-accelerated rendering, a fully no-code interface, real-time streaming that has no retirement date, and transparent pricing that starts free.
Critical for anyone evaluating Power BI for real-time in 2026
Creation of new streaming semantic models has been blocked since 31 October 2024, and all existing real-time streaming models are retired on 31 October 2027. Source: Microsoft Power BI documentation.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| October 2024 | Microsoft announces the retirement of real-time streaming in Power BI and points users to Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence as the replacement path. |
| 31 October 2024 | New push semantic models, streaming semantic models, PubNub streaming models and streaming data tiles can no longer be created. Existing models keep working. |
| Now | Existing streaming models continue to function, but no new real-time components can be added. |
| 31 October 2027 | Full retirement. Existing streaming models stop working, and Stream Analytics jobs with Power BI output connectors stop functioning. |
The practical implication is straightforward. Any team starting a real-time dashboard project on Power BI today is building on a feature that is already closed to new implementations and disappears entirely within eighteen months. Any team with existing real-time dashboards needs a migration plan before October 2027.
Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence is the recommended path, but it means separate licensing, separate infrastructure and a genuine migration project. If you are going to migrate anyway, it is worth comparing the alternatives rather than defaulting to the same vendor.
This is the most urgent reason teams are looking in 2026. For IoT sensors, financial feeds, industrial monitoring or live operational data, Power BI is not a viable starting point today.
Pro caps scheduled refreshes at 48 per day, so data is at best 30 minutes old. Premium capacity improves this but starts at $4,995 per month. The gap between batch refresh and true streaming is architectural, not a pricing tier you can buy your way past cheaply.
Power BI Desktop is free for one person. The moment you share, every recipient needs Pro at $14 per user per month. A team of twenty where five people build and fifteen only look at dashboards pays for twenty licences, not five. Scale that to a dashboard distributed across a 100-person department and viewing alone costs $16,800 per year.
This is the comparison most teams get wrong when they evaluate alternatives. In Dashtera, viewing a shared dashboard costs nothing. Only the people who build dashboards need a paid seat, so the cost scales with your authors rather than with your audience.
Year-over-year comparisons, running totals, dynamic periods and anything involving filter context need custom DAX measures. In practice that means business users depend on an analyst for any metric beyond a simple sum, which is where most self-service rollouts stall.
Reports are saved as binary PBIX packages that cannot be diffed, merged or meaningfully version controlled. Two analysts working on the same report have to coordinate who holds the master file.
The built-in library covers bar, line, pie, scatter, map, table and matrix. Engineering teams needing 3D surfaces or spectrograms, and trading teams needing Heikin-Ashi or Renko charts with indicators, have to rely on third-party custom visuals, which adds publisher dependency and configuration overhead.
If your data lives in PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, MongoDB, Snowflake outside Azure, or an IoT broker, the experience is noticeably less seamless than the Azure and SQL Server path the product is optimised for.
Dashtera covers the gaps where Power BI teams run out of road: real-time streaming with no retirement date, GPU rendering that holds up at any data volume, connectors that do not assume Microsoft, and chart types Power BI does not have. It is built by LightningChart Ltd, whose GPU chart engines are used in engineering and scientific software worldwide.
| Real-time connectors | Prometheus, InfluxDB 1, InfluxDB 2, InfluxDB 3, TimescaleDB, WebSocket |
|---|---|
| Database and cloud | Google BigQuery, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS SQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Snowflake, Redis, Elasticsearch, Apache Cassandra, Databricks, Trino |
Paid plans include unlimited data connectors, so connecting PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Snowflake costs the same as connecting Google BigQuery, with no per-source surcharges. Real-time streaming from Prometheus, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB and WebSocket is available as an add-on to any paid plan. The full list is on the data connectors page.
Real-time streaming with no end-of-life date
With the real-time streaming add-on, WebSocket, Prometheus, InfluxDB and TimescaleDB connections stream live data into GPU-rendered charts continuously. There is no refresh cap to work around and no 30-minute floor. See real-time data visualization for live examples.
No DAX, and no licence to look at a dashboard
Calculations are built through functions and the visual editor rather than a formula language, and dashboard sharing does not require every viewer to hold a paid seat in the way Power BI Pro does.
Chart types Power BI does not have
GPU 3D charts, spectrograms, polar charts, and over 100 technical indicators with 30 plus drawing tools, all as native no-code chart types rather than marketplace visuals.
Video Panel and Data Playback
Video Panel embeds live or recorded video beside the charts on the same canvas. Data Playback replays historical data through the live dashboard at configurable speed for incident review and training. Power BI has no equivalent to either.
On-premises with full feature parity
Power BI Report Server offers a reduced feature set compared with the cloud service. Dashtera's on-premises deployment matches the cloud version feature for feature, and an OEM and white-label option is available for embedding.

Larger datasets, AI features, paginated reports. Still no real-time streaming future.
Organization-wide capacity. Higher refresh rates, still batch rather than streaming.
Basic 2D charts, up to 3 charts per dashboard, 500 data points, CSV, JSON, XML and Excel import, 100 MB storage. No credit card, no time limit. Database connectors and real-time streaming are not included.
Unlimited charts and data points, SQL database queries, unlimited data connectors, advanced sharing, 1 GB storage. Real-time streaming available as an add-on.
Everything in Business Intelligence plus advanced XY charting, full 3D charting, polar charts and engineering and scientific chart types.
Everything in Engineering and Science plus technical analysis charts, 100+ indicators and 30+ drawing tools.
How to read this table
Power BI Pro is charged per person who touches the dashboard, including people who only look at it. Dashtera charges only for the people who build dashboards. For a team of five authors and forty-five viewers, Power BI Pro costs $8,400 per year while the same group on Dashtera Business Intelligence costs $1,200, because the forty-five viewers pay nothing.
How Dashtera plans fit together
Basic is free and covers file-based dashboards with basic 2D charts. The paid plans add unlimited charts and data points, SQL database queries and unlimited data connectors, with Engineering and Science adding 3D and polar charting and Finance and Trading adding technical analysis. Real-time streaming, statistics charts, map charts and machine learning are add-ons to any paid plan, and annual billing saves 17 percent. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Choose Dashtera when:
you have real-time dashboards to migrate before October 2027, or a new real-time project that Power BI can no longer support. You want colleagues to build dashboards without learning DAX. You do not want to buy a licence for everyone who merely looks at a report. You need 3D charts, spectrograms, financial indicators, Video Panel or Data Playback. Your data lives largely outside the Microsoft stack.
Stay with Power BI when:
your organization runs on Microsoft 365, Azure and Dynamics, and that integration saves real time every day. Your analysts are fluent in DAX and use the modelling layer seriously. Your reporting is scheduled and historical rather than live. Your governance requirements are already built around Power BI workspaces and sensitivity labels.
No code required. Start free on the Basic plan with no credit card, then add database connectors, advanced charts or real-time streaming when you need them. Annual billing saves 17 percent.
Start for free See all plans Real-time examplesYes. Microsoft announced the retirement in October 2024. Creation of new streaming semantic models, push models, PubNub models and streaming tiles has been blocked since 31 October 2024, and all existing real-time streaming models retire on 31 October 2027. Microsoft recommends migrating to Fabric Real-Time Intelligence, which requires separate licensing and infrastructure.
Dashtera is built around real-time streaming rather than treating it as an add-on. Native WebSocket, Prometheus, InfluxDB 1/2/3 and TimescaleDB connectors feed GPU-rendered charts continuously, with no refresh cap and no retirement date. It also adds 3D charts, spectrograms and financial technical indicators that Power BI does not provide natively.
Power BI Desktop is free for one person, but sharing requires Pro at $14 per user per month for everyone involved, including people who only view dashboards. Premium Per User is $24, and Premium capacity starts at $4,995 per month. A twenty-person team where only five build dashboards still pays for twenty Pro licences.
No. Viewing a shared dashboard does not require a paid seat in Dashtera, so costs scale with the number of people building dashboards rather than the number reading them. Power BI works the other way: sharing requires Power BI Pro at $14 per user per month for every recipient, which is why its cost rises with audience size.
No. Dashtera has no formula language requirement. Calculations, filtering, grouping and aggregation are configured visually in the dashboard editor, which is the main reason non-technical users get productive faster than they typically do in Power BI.
Yes, and with full feature parity to the cloud version, which Report Server does not offer. Dashtera also provides hosted private systems and an OEM white-label option for embedding dashboards in your own product.
Yes. MS SQL Server is a native connector, alongside PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Databricks, Elasticsearch, Redis, Apache Cassandra and Trino. What Dashtera does not replicate is the deep Teams, SharePoint and Dynamics integration that is Power BI's strongest advantage.
