Want to see your data come to life?
Begin building your dashboards now, and unleash your creativity!
Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio in April 2026, but the product limits did not change with the name. Data Studio is free only while your data stays inside Google. Connect anything else and you pay $20 to $350 per month per connector, on a tool with no real-time streaming, no 3D charts and no on-premises option at any price. Dashtera covers every one of those gaps.
Looker Studio is now called Data Studio again
Google announced the change on 11 April 2026 and it went live in the product on 16 April 2026. Reports, data sources, permissions and shared links all carried over automatically. If you are searching for a Looker Studio alternative, you are searching for a Data Studio alternative: same product, previous name.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2016 | Google launches Data Studio as a free self-service reporting tool. |
| February 2020 | Google completes its acquisition of Looker, the enterprise BI platform. |
| October 2022 | Data Studio is renamed Looker Studio to bring Google's analytics products under one brand. |
| 11 April 2026 | Google announces the reversal. The shared brand had led buyers to confuse a free dashboard builder with an enterprise BI platform. |
| 16 April 2026 | The rename ships. Looker Studio becomes Data Studio, Looker Studio Pro becomes Data Studio Pro, and Looker remains separate as the enterprise platform. |
The rename fixed a branding problem. It did not change what the product can do, and every limitation below applied equally the week before it happened.
Data Studio is free only for Google sources. Every non-Google database, ad platform or SaaS tool needs a paid third-party connector with its own monthly fee. Four outside sources can mean $80 to $1,400 per month on a product most people describe as free.
Data Studio Pro lists at $9 per user per Google Cloud project per month, and Google notes the rate varies with subscription length. Three people working across five projects need fifteen licences. Pro adds organization-owned reports, team workspaces, more scheduled deliveries, Gemini features and support. It does not add faster dashboards or real-time data.
Data updates on a schedule or when someone clicks refresh. There is no WebSocket streaming, no live time-series database connection and no continuously updating dashboard. For live sensor data, IoT fleets, production lines or trading feeds, it is not a candidate at any tier.
Reports slow noticeably once datasets pass roughly a million rows, which pushes teams into pre-aggregating everything in BigQuery before it reaches the dashboard. Rendering happens on the CPU in the browser, so there is no way to scale past that ceiling inside the tool.
The catalogue covers bar, line, pie, scatter, geo maps and tables. No 3D surfaces or scatter, no spectrograms, no polar charts, no financial technical analysis charts. Engineering, scientific and trading teams run out of options quickly.
Data Studio is cloud-only at every tier including Pro. Organizations with data residency rules, isolated OT networks or government compliance obligations cannot use it for sensitive data at all.
Dashtera is a GPU-accelerated no-code dashboard platform built for the work that starts where Data Studio stops, while keeping the drag-and-drop simplicity that makes Data Studio approachable in the first place.
| Real-time connectors | Prometheus, InfluxDB 1, InfluxDB 2, InfluxDB 3, TimescaleDB, WebSocket |
|---|---|
| Database and cloud | Google BigQuery, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS SQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Snowflake, Redis, Elasticsearch, Apache Cassandra, Databricks, Trino |
Paid plans include unlimited data connectors, so connecting PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Snowflake costs the same as connecting Google BigQuery, with no per-source surcharges. Real-time streaming from Prometheus, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB and WebSocket is available as an add-on to any paid plan. The full list is on the data connectors page.
Real-time streaming as the default
With the real-time streaming add-on, Prometheus, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB and WebSocket connections stream live data into GPU-rendered charts at a sustained 60 frames per second. No refresh schedule, no polling interval, no pre-aggregation step to keep the dashboard responsive. See real-time data visualization and IoT sensor dashboards.
GPU rendering that holds at scale
Every chart type renders on the GPU through WebGL. Where Data Studio slows past roughly a million rows, Dashtera keeps millions of points interactive, which is what industrial, scientific and financial dashboards actually generate.
3D charts, spectrograms and financial charts built in
The Engineering and Science plan adds 3D surface and scatter charts, spectrograms, polar charts and real-time waveform displays. The Finance and Trading plan adds over 100 technical indicators and 30 plus drawing tools with every standard financial chart type.
Video Panel and Data Playback
Video Panel puts live or recorded video on the dashboard canvas beside the charts. Data Playback replays historical data through the live dashboard at configurable speed, so anyone can review an incident, a test run or a shift after the fact.
On-premises deployment
Dashtera runs fully on-premises with the same features as the cloud version, so regulated data never leaves your network.

How Dashtera plans fit together
Basic is free and covers file-based dashboards with basic 2D charts. The paid plans add unlimited charts and data points, SQL database queries and unlimited data connectors, with Engineering and Science adding 3D and polar charting and Finance and Trading adding technical analysis. Real-time streaming, statistics charts, map charts and machine learning are add-ons to any paid plan, and annual billing saves 17 percent. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Choose Dashtera when:
your data lives outside Google as well as inside it. You need real-time streaming from sensors, time-series databases, WebSocket feeds or Prometheus metrics. Your dashboards handle millions of rows and must stay interactive. You need 3D charts, spectrograms, financial indicators, Video Panel or Data Playback. You need on-premises deployment. You want one flat per-user price with unlimited connectors included on paid plans and no per-project multiplier.
Stay with Data Studio when:
your data sits almost entirely in Google Analytics, Google Ads, Sheets and BigQuery. Your reporting is scheduled rather than live. Standard BI chart types cover what you need. Your team already works in Google Workspace and values that collaboration. Your budget is zero and Google sources cover everything you report on.
The costs that sit outside the sticker price
Two things surprise teams in Data Studio: third-party connectors are billed per connector per month, and Pro licences are billed per user per Google Cloud project, so a five-project organization pays for the same person five times. Dashtera bills one flat price per user, and paid plans include unlimited data connectors with no per-source fee and no per-project multiplier.
No code required. Start free on the Basic plan with no credit card, then add database connectors, advanced charts or real-time streaming when you need them. Annual billing saves 17 percent.
Start for free See all plans Real-time examplesGoogle announced the change on 11 April 2026 and shipped it on 16 April 2026. The 2022 rebrand from Data Studio to Looker Studio had caused lasting confusion between the free self-service reporting tool and Looker, the enterprise BI platform built on LookML. Data Studio now covers personal data exploration and ad-hoc reporting, while Looker remains the enterprise product. Existing reports, data sources, permissions and shared links moved over automatically.
The standard version is free for report creators and viewers, but only for Google data sources. Connecting non-Google databases, marketing platforms or SaaS tools requires third-party connectors costing between $20 and $350 per month each. Data Studio Pro is $9 per user per Google Cloud project per month, and Google notes the rate varies with subscription length.
Pro is billed per user per Google Cloud project rather than simply per user, so a team of three working across five projects needs fifteen licences. Pro adds organization-owned reports, team workspaces, more scheduled deliveries, Gemini features, Google Cloud support and an uptime SLA. It does not add faster dashboards, better chart types, free third-party connectors or real-time streaming.
No. Data updates on a schedule or when triggered manually. For live sensor monitoring, IoT dashboards, financial feeds or operational alerting, Dashtera is the appropriate alternative, with native WebSocket, Prometheus, InfluxDB and TimescaleDB connectors feeding GPU-rendered charts continuously.
No. Data Studio is cloud-only at every tier including Pro. Dashtera offers full on-premises deployment with feature parity to the cloud version, which matters for data residency requirements, isolated OT networks and government compliance obligations.
They are separate products. Data Studio, formerly Looker Studio, is the free or low-cost self-service reporting tool priced from free to $9 per user per project per month. Looker is Google's enterprise BI platform with LookML modelling, governed semantic models and enterprise contracts. The April 2026 rename exists to make that distinction clear.
